Winterisation Guide: Protecting Pipework, Tanks and Process Systems from Freeze Damage
A practical guide to winterising pipework, tanks and process equipment before freezing weather hits — including a freeze protection checklist and FAQs.
Trace Heating for Food & Beverage Manufacturing
Practical guidance on maintaining reliable product flow in temperature-sensitive food and beverage production lines.
Trace Heating for Water & Wastewater Sites
Practical guidance on protecting dosing lines, sample lines, analyser feeds and exposed pipework from cold-weather disruption.
Field Notes: Food & Beverage — Flow, Flow, Flow. Move It.
It hadn't frozen. It had simply become too cold to process — and that's often the harder problem to spot. In food and beverage production, a relatively small temperature drop can increase viscosity, encourage crystallisation, or make the product much harder to pump.
Field Notes: Outdoor Systems — Three Trades, One System, One Gap Nobody Owned
The heating cable passed its test. The insulation looked complete. The cladding had been closed. Then the temperature dropped and the pipe still froze. Two stories from outdoor and winterisation work — one about a gap in accountability, one about a gap in timing.
Field Notes: Power Generation — Gigawatts to No Watts in Ten Metres
Could a site producing gigawatts of electricity be held up by ten metres of small-bore tubing? It sounds unlikely — but two plants stopped in the winter of 2025. Plant availability often comes down to much smaller components than the turbine, boiler or generator.
Field Notes: Water & Wastewater — The Instrument Was Never the Problem
On a water or wastewater site, the biggest winter risk is rarely the main process line. It's the smaller, easy-to-overlook services — sample lines, chemical dosing pipework, analyser feeds — that fail first, and rarely in a way that looks like a trace heating fault.
Can Damaged Trace Heating Cable Be Repaired?
A repair is only successful if it restores the cable system's electrical, mechanical and environmental integrity. Some damage can be repaired with an approved joint — other damage requires replacement.
Does Trace Heating Need Thermal Insulation?
A working heating cable cannot compensate indefinitely for missing or waterlogged insulation. In most industrial applications, trace heating and thermal insulation are designed to work together.
